Sangkhim Canaan School acquired a 5.2ha plot along Chansari Road in 2008, but the construction of the campus would only complete in September 2011. During 2009 to 2011, we started our nursery and kindergarten operations in a small rented house. The first cohort comprised only 15 children.
Kim Youmi, a second generation Korean missionary, was our first principal and served until 2012 when she had to focus on her duty as a mother of a growing family. In these initial years, we focused on developing the curriculum and a small core of dedicated teachers.
By the time we moved into the current campus in 2011, enrolment had quadrupled to 59. With the completion of the Phase 1 campus, we were able to quickly grow past an enrollment of 300 by 2015. These nine classrooms across two blocks still house our nursery and kindergarten today.
Hort Hor, our second and current principal joined us in 2012 and the school grew steadily under his leadership. With the rapid growth, we commenced on our Phase 2 construction in 2015.
The school grew rapidly from 2015 to 2020, seeing its enrolment more than double to 700+ by 2020. Many more classrooms and facilities were added in this 5-year period.
The completion of 10 more classrooms in Phase 2 enabled us to accommodate the primary and junior high school students (two classes per level). The canteen and multi-purpose hall was also added to serve the burgeoning student population.
As the school became recognized and accepted in the community, we also added the chapel and the local church began to form.
It was a challenging period for the school from 2020 through early 2022. Sponsorships declined, but more classrooms had to be added to accommodate new classes. Hence, we had to innovate on building methods and adopted modular containers for our next 8 classrooms to house the high school classes.
During this period, teachers had to try new methods of teaching and worked over-time to prime the curriculum for online delivery. Students had to adapt to new classroom formats.
Foreign visitations ground to a halt and the school had to be more independent in everything it did.
With COVID restrictions receding, we were able to resume many of our cherished group and community activities. Student camps, sports meets and graduation ceremonies were all back in full force!
We are once again able to receive foreign guests, much to the joy of teachers and students. Having seen its growth decline and stagnate through 2020 to 2022, the school has now fully rebounded.
